Why infrastructure owners don’t trust the cloud?

Structural health monitoring (SHM) data is evolving from a temporary project output into a long-term strategic asset that supports infrastructure management throughout an asset's lifecycle. As continuous monitoring systems become integrated into asset management workflows, questions of data ownership, governance, and control are becoming as important as sensing accuracy and analytical capabilities. Drawing on insights from Dr. Faroz, this article argues that infrastructure owners increasingly view trust as a core engineering requirement, particularly for critical assets where data custody and accountability are paramount. Rather than treating cloud adoption as an inevitable technological progression, organizations are assessing deployment models based on their governance, security, and operational needs. The discussion highlights why no single architecture fits every infrastructure asset and suggests that hybrid deployments—combining cloud-enabled analytics with owner-controlled data storage—may become the preferred approach. Ultimately, the future of SHM will be defined not only by the quality of monitoring data, but by the flexibility and trustworthiness of the systems that manage it.
